To me, this means take action, be a change agent. I was on Facebook the other day and read this statement. “Change the world by your example, not your opinion.” To me, this is a profound statement. People’s opinions get shared significantly more often than than anyone will opt to do something about a given situation.
There are SO many opinions shared by the public right now. Through the media, social media, conversations, phone calls, and texts. Everyone wants to change the world by sharing their view of what is right. Opinions are shared quite literally more often than people change their underwear and both stink. These are based on views and the belief systems of the individual sharing the opinion. Unfortunately, because they can, people think they should.
Many people think that by speaking louder, or longer, on a subject that their view will change the view of others. This will never be true.
Our recent election in the United States is the perfect example. Everyone had some sort of opinion, and they shared them fervently. What should happen, what would happen, how and by when. The reality is that the biggest change came about by people getting off their butts and showing up to a voting booth. Regardless of the thousand opinions, views, stories and commentaries shared by the mass media; people that took action made a change in this country. The people that showed up to vote, voted for who they thought would make the biggest impact. For many, this may be the opportunity to reclaim our country. (Just a brief tangent, but hey, I figured that’s a really relevant example right now.)
So here’s the deal, for you to make the magic happen… DO SOMETHING. TAKE ACTION. BE AN EXAMPLE! No matter how small an action you may think you are taking, if you start now, you can change not just your world, but the world for those around you as well.
I’ll leave you with this awesome (and the actual) quote, from Mahatma Gandhi – “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.”
