On a recent episode of The Leadership Toolkit, I had the opportunity to interview Jacob Morgan. Jacob is a professionally trained futurist, speaker, and author of 5 best-selling books including his most recent, Leading with Vulnerability: Unlock Your Greatest Superpower to Transform Yourself, Your Team, and Your Organization. Jacob’s work has been endorsed by the CEOs of Mastercard, Best Buy, The Home Depot, Hyatt, Audi, and many others. Jacob shares with us how to lead with vulnerability, versus just being vulnerable at work. He points out how leading with vulnerability can help us become more competent and take action in our leadership roles to see massive success.
Leading with vulnerability can be a scary thing, but it’s an important part of becoming a leader. In this video, Jacob shares with us some insights on why leading with vulnerability is important. More importantly, he shares and how to do it. He also shares some tips on what to do when we’re feeling vulnerable and how to help other people lead with vulnerability too. We had great conversation on what makes up a vulnerable leader, can you be too vulnerable, and how to handle yourself if someone intends to use your vulnerability as a leader against you.
One of my favorite points was a rather framework. Jacob shared this insight on what he calls “The Vulnerability Wheel.” Jacob breaks down the following items to ask yourself before you plan to share what may make you vulnerable as a leader!
🛞 THE VULNERABILITY WHEEL 🛞
- Intention – what is the purpose of you sharing?
- Who – Being aware of who (and why) you are being vulnerable with.
- When – The timing for what you are sharing matters.
- Tone – Voice tone, body language, presentation style, always make a difference in how your message is received.
- Professionalism – Are you being professional and exercising good judgment with who and how you are sharing your message.
This was just one of the massively informative and helpful insights that Jacob shared during our conversation. Make sure to tune in and catch the entire episode!
